Los Angeles County has been the place of at least 12 Chinatowns starting in the latter 1800s. Many began as a small business or residence and faded away while others became a robust town within a city offering its inhabitants economic opportunities, housing and services.
5 Downey Chinatown
Downey Chinatown was in the town of Downey on the west side of Crawford Street between Second Street and Third Street (photo today). In 1887. It began with one laundry and one dwelling. However, all had disappeared by 1891.
